Woody Allen, Austin Powers and….erm….Jack Duckworth. What do they have in common? ‘Specs Appeal’, a slice of fashion that’s dominating the catwalks right now. For Woody those horn-rimmed spectacles ooze neurotic New Yorker while for ‘Our Jack’ they say – look, I’m just your average British man, having a pint down at the Rovers, but even I can pull off this look.
Glasses are amazing for adjusting your look with minimal effort. I’m sure we’re all familiar with those rare, but unforgettable occasions when a normally naked eyed friend appears, casually wearing a pair of glasses. But glasses are great for a number of reasons aside from clear vision and Clark Kent/Peter Parker superhero related transformations.
Firstly, they hide beasty under-eye circles, then they’ll make you look significantly more intelligent than you actually are, and as an added bonus they’re an effective prop when it comes to mastering the art of the disapproving glare. But when glasses come back in fashion, they really do come back. They’re the hum-dingers of the eye world: the lost but not forgotten Geek glasses, and when you hook them behind the ears and slide them up the nose, I guarantee that you’ll be transformed. These big cheek-skimmers are comparable in magnitude to those safely goggles you had to wear in Chemistry at school – hot. But don’t be put off because if you wear these, believe it or not, you’ll be super stylish and well and truly framous.
If you have a prescription then get your lenses fitted into a pair of these Ray-Ban frames, but if you have the vision of an eagle don’t despair, just get some fakies from Urban Outfitter. No one needs to know that you’re pretending – just squint a bit when you take them off.
I have to admit that I’m slightly disappointed that we can’t go crazy with our frames like Elton John would, but I’m convinced that with a little patience Elton’s eyewear will return. Maybe with a little more patience Dame Edna Everage styles will be in an opticians near you, and with even more patience I’m sure we’ll be welcoming back the monocle…fingers crossed.
